2013 August Newsletter

If watching the CrossFit Games online or in person doesn't get you excited about your fitness then I don't know what does.

Get Motivated

In case you missed it Rich Froning became the first man to win the CrossFit Games three times in a row, again taking home the title Fittest Man on Earth. As cool as that is that is not what excites me and motivates me when I watch the CrossFit Games. The thing that excites me about the CrossFit Games is that it is ordinary people doing extraordinary things. For instance, if you were watching for it, you would have missed Dave Foster of Front Range CrossFit perform a one armed-snatch at 140-lbs. His right index finger was smashed between too pieces of the "worm" at the end of the first WOD of the weekend. The bone was broken, he suffered a severe laceration (15 stitches) and was told by the doctor that he nearly lost the finger tip. The Games med staff quickly stitched the laceration and bandaged his finger in time for him to get back on the field to pull the Iditarod sled. He went on to compete in four more events including his unforgettable performance in the chipper where he met the minimum work requirement and kept Front Range CrossFit alive by performing the deadlift, chest to bar pull-up, squat clean, chin over bar pull up and snatch ALL WITH ONLY ONE HAND! Foster is an awesome representation of an ordinary person doing something incredible. Where most people would have quit he didn't want to let his team down. See pictures of Dave's amazing lift below. Play special attention to the judges surprised face as he completes his rep.

What is motivating is that none of this is beyond our reach. When was the last time you watched a football game or baseball game and said man, I want to do that! For me it was rare because the chance to become a collegiate or professional player was slim. And maybe it is a pipe dream but there is a part of me that says, "Hey, I can do that". And I know that I am not alone in this feeling. It motivates and pushes me to try harder, get stronger and become better at my fitness.
Yes, it is kind of weird that 30,000 people crammed into a stadium for a weekend, and hundreds of thousands online, wanting to watch people from all over the world work out. But it is because of the fact that we have been in their shoes. Not on that stage but in the gym. We have suffered and grueled through these kinds of workout to see what extraordinary heights our bodies can take us. I get excited not because some "celebrity" won again, but that an ordinary person can do something so extraordinary and yet within my own reach.

2nd Annual CFM 10 Skills Team Challenge

This month on August 10th is our 2nd annual CFM 10 Skills Team Challenge. We have a good group of teams registered so far, but there is still room for a few more teams. If you are on the edge, just commit and put a team together, but get registered as soon as possible.
The first three WODs will be announced next week. We will post video demonstrations of the standards for movements and expectations of the WODs.
We will be offering individual prizes to the top three teams. Only Rx'd teams are eligible for the prizes.
Entry for the Challenge is $120 per team.
Registration time is running out!

Team captains can sign up here > REGISTER

The 10 Skills Team Challenge is a blast. If you did it last time. Do it again! If you didn't do it last time, then don't miss out this time. Get your team together and represent CFM as we will be inviting the surrounding Boxes.

Schedule Changes

We are making two schedule changes this month. Both are long overdue.
Starting August 23rd we will be adding a 4:00 pm class on Friday
Starting September 7th we will be adding a 9:00 am class on Saturday and moving the 10:00 am class to 10:30 am.

Please note when the changes begin.

Personal Training Sessions
Many of you may not know that we do offer personal training sessions for those of you that do want to get some focused attention or alternative programming. Personal training is extremely beneficial. Imagine if you got the head trainers full attention for an entire class and having a personalize fitness plan tailored to your specific needs. This is what our One-on-One personal training programs look like. One-on-One training is an amazingly effective and efficient way to achieve your individual fitness goals. We have several certified personal trainers that are available to help you with specific fitness needs. Your trainer will work with you to identify and clarify your fitness goals, conduct a functional movement assessment, and design a program specifically targeted at improving your deficiencies while optimizing your strengths, thereby enabling you to achieve your goals as quickly as possible. One-on-one training is recommended if you have been sedentary for a long period of time, are training for a specific sport or event, have significant health limitations or just prefer the additional attention and accountability.
Normally these sessions run $25 per 30-minute sessions.
We are running a special this month to promote this personal training. For $195 you can purchase an Unlimited month and receive four (4) 30-minute personal training sessions, or for $255 for Unlimited and eight (8) 30-minute sessions.
See myself or Mitchell if you are interested in trying this out.

August Macombie

This month, the Macombie for the "Daddy / Daughter Award" goes to Tom and Sarah. Tom and Sarah came to CrossFit Macomb last year in May as our first Daddy-Daughter Duo. They even brought in their niece/cousin from California who is in the picture below. Since then they have inspired several other daddy-daughter and even a few mom-daughter combos. I love the fact that Tom and Sarah can workout together week after week and the fact that often are in the same class. Tom has been consistently losing weight and has lost over 40 lbs since starting last year, and has moved some WODs to the golf course when he does 10 push-ups at every tee box. Sarah is continually getting stronger. She a over a 300-lb deadlift and is working on getting bandless pull-ups and toes to bar. Sarah also competed in the Open WODs back in April. Keep up the great work Tom and Sarah.
