Most of us are aware of what happens to the body when we exercise. We build more muscle or more stamina. We feel how daily activities like climbing stairs becomes easier if we exercise regularly. When it comes to our brain and mood though, the connection isn't so clear. What triggers happiness in our brain when we exercise?
Here is what actually happens:
If you start exercising, your brain recognizes this as a moment of stress. As your heart pressure increases, the brain thinks you are either fighting the enemy or fleeing from it. To protect yourself and your brain from stress, you release a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). This BDNF has a protective and also reparative element to your memory neurons and acts as a reset switch. That's why we often feel so at ease and like things are clear after exercising.
At the same time, endorphins, another chemical to fight stress, are released in your brain. Your endorphins main purpose are this, writes researcher MK McGovern:
"These endorphins tend to minimize the discomfort of exercise, block the feeling of pain, and are even associated with a feeling of euphoria."
I know this is a little sciency but I wanted to talk briefly about why we love to WOD. Its not just the results it is the chemical reactions in our brain. So exercising has multiple benefits not only physically but mentally.
Ben Schulenburg
Unfortunately life is not always euphoric and happy. It was with great sadness that we said goodbye to a good friend and fellow Crossfitter, Ben Schulenburg. Thank you to everyone that helped and supported the Schulenburg family. Also, thanks to everyone that helped clean up Ben's yard. We cut the grass, weeded the garden, power washed the house and edged the sidewalks. The family greatly appreciated this as they prepare to sell Ben's house. They sent us this card expressing their thanks:
CrossFit Macomb Family,
Words cannot express our gratitude for all of the CrossFit family for all of your support and acts of kindness during this tragic loss of Ben. You are an amazing group of people who have showered us with love beyond measure. Thank you for being a big part of Ben's life. God Bless you. Art and Chris
We were also able to raise $1400 for Ben's sisters flight back home to Alaska. These last minute flights are not cheap and your donations helped emensly. She was floored and overwhelmed by your generousity and support. Thank you very much!

October Macombie
This month the Macombie Award for "The Look" goes to Amber. Everyone has heard of the "The Look". For me I usually get it from my wife when I do something stupid. However, Amber has perfected the "The Look". It often comes after I tell her what the WOD is for the day and especially when we talk about the weight that she will be lifting. Amber has a gymnastic background and jumped right in on the handstand push-ups and handstand walks. Amber continues to work on the Olympic lifts and get stronger with each WOD. By the way... don't let the "The Look" fool you. Amber has a very sweet heart behind her laser eyes.
